Our Productions2007/2008 Season ProductionsArrangement For Two Violas

November 8 – 25, 2007 || Arrangement For Two Violas is a beautiful, yet tragic story by Susan Lieberman, centered around Peter Chase, a country doctor who devotes himself only to his patients in a small Wisconsin town in 1938. Peter is single and without family. Through his treatment of his friend Karl Schuler’s emphysema, Peter comes into contact with Henry Meegan, a nationally-known specialist in Milwaukee. Peter discovers love for the first time. Henry is not only the charismatic director of his own medical institution, he is, like Peter, an avid amateur violist. Peter and Henry conduct a passionate affair in secret. Fearful of what would happen if their community finds out, their relationship is threatened when Henry’s desire to challenge society and live openly conflicts with Peter’s need for privacy. When the two men's intimacy is accidentally revealed, the consequences are immense, exacting an emotional price.

ABOUT SUSAN LIEBERMAN

Susan Lieberman is the author of ARRANGEMENT FOR TWO VIOLAS -- recipient of a Jeff Citation for New Work -- which was first seen in Stage Left's LeapFest, had a world premiere by Visions and Voices Theatre Co., was produced by Bloomington Playwrights Project, will be produced next season by Pandora Productions in Louisville, KY, and is included in NEW PLAYS FROM CHICAGO. Susan's musical PRAIRIE LIGHTS (with co-authors David Rush and Rosalie Gerut) received a Jeff Award nomination for New Work; was produced by Stage Left for two holiday seasons at Theatre Building Chicago, as well as by the Jerusalem English Speaking Theatre in Israel; and is published by Dramatic Publishing Co. Another musical, WHIRLYBIRDS, was presented in Stage Left's 2007 LeapFest. Other plays include THE PINK PARLOR, a finalist in the National Playwrights Competition; MAREK'S MONKEY, produced by Chicago Dramatists; and STEAMSHIP QUANZA (with Stephen J. Morewitz), produced originally in Chicago with a production at Jewish Theatre Grand Rapids slated for April 2008.

Lieberman received Emmy nominations for her children's television scripts, SANDY AND SAM (WGN-TV) and PRAIRIE LATKES (CBS/WBBM-TV). Her other teleplays include CHARLIE'S RISK and A HILL OF BEANS, also aired on WBBM-TV.

A graduate of Duke University, Lieberman was a production assistant at Charles Marowitz's Open Space Theatre and later worked for Thelma Holt at the Round House in London. She was the Associate Editor of Theatre Crafts magazine in New York for four years before returning to Chicago, where she has been a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists for many years.
